The ‘Bringing Clay to Life’ project is developing a new creative
activity for the Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum,
fusing the traditional medium of clay with digital filmmaking.
On the project, students from Totton College worked with
clay artist Lyn Gallagher and filmmaker Lisa Calder.
The young people devised the story ideas for the films,
‘Roman Rising’ and ‘The Night Watchman’, based on the collection at the museum.
The project took place over four sessions which included investigating the museum,
making the figures and scenery, creating the films and sound effects.
The figures were made using Plasticene on a wire framed body called an armature.
The characters were moved incrementally and photographed using a technique called
stop motion and effects were applied by compositing in Adobe After effects.
The Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum and The Butterfly Fx
are planning more Claymation projects next year.

‘Adventures in Victorian Gardens and Glasshouses’ is a Young Roots project on which young people investigated the heritage of Staunton Country Park. The young participants on the project are unemployed and have mental health issues or learning difficulties.
Staunton Country Park is a significant heritage site because it is the former Leigh Park estate of Sir George Staunton. He worked in Britain’s first Embassy mission in China and later was a botanist who collected plants, which were grown from seed in his glasshouses on the on his estate. Today Staunton Country Park stands as an example of Victorian fascination for pleasure grounds and nature.
Staunton Country Park is located in Leigh Park near Havant. Leigh Park is mostly a 1960’s redevelopment overspill suburb for Portsmouth and comprises of council estates. It was formed on the actual land of Staunton’s estate and is one of the most deprived areas in Hampshire with high unemployment and social problems.
The young people created an animation film that portrays the history of Staunton Country Park. The story is told by the young people and Staunton Country Park staff. It explains who Sir George Staunton was, what plants were named after him, how he was a botanist who grew exotic plants at Staunton and about how he created the pleasure gardens.
The concept for the film’s story through which the heritage is told is based on Alice in Wonderland and came from a meeting with the young people on the 8th December 2011. Alice in Wonderland is a Victorian novel which depicts a young person having a fantasy adventure in a strange world with talking animals. The Victorians were fascinated by nature, generated by the discoveries by explorers of exotic animals from around the world and this inspired their literature. In the film the young people will had their own personal ‘adventure’ at Staunton Country Park encountering a magic fish, pirates, ghosts and talking animals.
The film was produced as a DVD that was distributed to all the participants, volunteers and the partners. The film was screened at a premiere event at Highbury College and at Staunton Country Park for schools and the local people to see with an exhibition displaying all the work done by the young people on the project.
An education pack was produced is based on the project activities. The purpose of the education pack is to provide a tool kit of how filmmaking can be a useful learning tool for investigating and disseminating heritage topics. The pack includes how to make two animations; tracing the journey to collect seeds from around the world and plants named after George Staunton. The partners Solent Youth Action and Staunton Country Park have copies of the packs to use with young people for future projects. On the Open Day at Staunton Country Park the film workshop activities were provided based on the education pack. The Open day was attended by the local Prospect School (a specialist school for young people with special needs) , Front Lawn Primary school, Park volunteers and other local people .

The Butterfly Fx worked on this project with Solent Youth Action and the Education Team at Staunton Country Park. This project was supported by Young Roots Heritage Lottery Fund, Hampshire Young Creatives and Solent Radio Community Chest.
The Butterfly Fx provided Titanic Experience workshops at the Art Gallery and the new SeaCity Museum in Southampton to commemorate its maiden voyage 100 years ago. We set up a live chroma key studio in which people could perform and instantly see themselves aboard the ship. Families and over 150 school children took part in dressing up and role playing being passengers and members of the crew. They were assigned the names of real people, told what happened on the fateful night and if they survived.
